Wines of the Week for November 30, 2017

Cantina Sociale Valpolicella Negrar Corvina 2015 (Veneto)
$9.85 (LCBO #519199)
Corvina is one of the three major grapes in Valpolicella – here produced as a single variety.  Deep ruby in colour with an earthy, cherry nose backed by light oak notes; medium-bodied, dry and fruity with raspberry and sour cherry flavours. Great value. (88.5)
Food match: pizza; pasta dishes

Domaine de la Chaise Touraine Sauvignon 2016
$16.95 (Vintages #452540)
Here’s a Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire’s Touraine region that comes on like a white Bordeaux. Medium straw in colour, it has a spicy, lanolin and lemon balm nose with a note of cut grass. Medium-bodied and crisply dry, it has flavours of elderberries and gooseberries – very fresh and lively on the palate. (89)
Food match: seafood; pan-fried fish

La Ferme du Mont Le Ponnant Côtes du Rhône 2015 (Rhône)
$19.95 (Vintages #171371)
A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. Dense purple in colour – as you’d expect from a warm sunny vintage that far south – it’s got a nose of blackberries and vanilla oak; full-bodied and dry, it has a distinct flavour of freshly picked blackberries with fresh acidity. (89)
Food match: beef casserole; pepper steak

A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 675: Port Dalhousie Underground

Monday, November 20th: Deborah has two of her book club ladies staying over. The kitchen is mercifully semi-operational. Spent most of the day inputting wine reviews from the December Vintages release. The liquor board puts out a huge number of products in the Christmas season. Opened a bottle of Alamos Seleccion Malbec 2014 from Argentina ($16.95 – Deep ruby colour; cedary, herbal, blackberry nose with a light floral note; medium-bodied, dry, ripe blackberry flavour with lively acidity and mellow tannins – 89).

Tuesday, November 21st: More inputting today. In the evening I was invited to a Port Dalhousie Underground tasting, which was held at Ravine Vineyard. The theme was old California Cabernets and how do they age. There were 18 wines, including two ringers,  divided into four flights – all served blind. Continue reading

A Wine Lover’s Diary, Part 674: Wine & Opera

Sunday, November 12th: Deborah and drove in to Toronto. I had a winerytohome tasting at Doug Towers’ and then we went to a celebration of life at our old condo for a neighbour who had passed away.

Monday, November 13th: Wrote my 680 NEWS wine reviews – four weeks’ worth so that I can cut down the number of times I have to drive into Toronto.

One of the things about moving to another city is that you have to find doctors, dentists, optometrists, cleaning ladies, gardeners, dog walkers, dry cleaners and the best Chinese food. We discovered Ma Chinese Cuisine at 123 Geneva Street. Now we have to find a good Indian restaurant.
