A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 963: Snowed Underground

PDU logo

The heavy snowfall this past week has had the same effect as the Covid lockdown. We don’t go out unless we have to and the cold saps our energy. Deborah and I did venture out, though, for a Port Dalhousie Underground event held at Creekside Winery. Took a while to find the place, as the winery sign had been blown down in the snow storm.

Tuesday, February 18th: The Port Dalhousie Underground, known familiarly as PDU, is an association of local wine lovers that has been tasting fine wines together since the early 1980s. The group’s logo is an image of the Port Dalhousie Lighthouse with the Latin motto, Portus Sub Terra.

The theme this evening was Piemonte Reds. Peter Gamble did a masterful job in flighting the wines and leading the discussion about them. There were four flights of four wines – Barbera d’Asti and Barbera d’Alba; Barbaresco and Barolo; Langhe DOC, Gattinara DOCG, Boca, Lessona; finally, the expensive, aged Barbaresco and Barolo.

My top wines:

  • Flight 1: Roberto Voerzio Barbera d’Alba 2017
  • Flight 2: Giacomo Borgogno Barolo 2012
  • Flight 3: Travaglini Gattinara Riserva 2013
  • Flight 4: Paolo Scavino Barolo 2005

The evening ended with a satisfying bowl of Boeuf Bourguignon prepared by one of Peller’s winemakers, Ben Minaker, with home-made bread by my dentist, David Bergen.

Other wines tasted this week: Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (New Zealand), Emiliana Adobe Rosé Reserva 2024, Le Clos Jordanne Jordan Village Pinot Noir 2019, Hidden Bench Chardonnay Tête de Cuvée 2017, MW Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (with dinner at Twisted Pig in Port Dalhousie), Megalomaniac Cabernet Franc Reserve 2022.

Finally, my wife bought me a shirt online, and I went bananas!
