A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 962: Amazing Dinner Party; Clos Vougeot x 2 and a Confession

Dinner wines

Tuesday, February 11th: We invited Ann Sperling and Peter Gamble to dinner (main course: rare filet mignon with mushroom sauce and grilled vegetables). For the apps of coconut shrimp, salami and nuts, I opened a bottle of Big Head Lipinski Chenin Blanc 2022. For the steak I chose a red Burgundy I know they would like – Remoissenet Clos Vougeot 2007. Peter brought along a bottle of his Versado 2022 for my cellar, and to go with the main course, a bottle of Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot 2005 (great to have friends like that!). Deborah had made a dessert of Skor Bars, which we devoured with a half bottle of Cantine de’ Ricci Vin Santo di Montepulciano 1995. A delightful meal.

Wednesday, February 12th: Today I did something that I have warned my readers against doing – but I couldn’t resist: I bought a bottle of wine because I was intrigued by the label! McPherson Wines Don’t Tell Gary Shiraz 2021 from Victoria in Australia. Apparently, Gary is the winery’s accountant. The winemaker used an expensive French oak puncheon to age the Shiraz. The wine was terrific!

Our a capella choir rehearsal was cancelled because of snow warnings. Will this winter never end?

Other wines tasted this week: Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2021, Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva 2018, Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2023, Henry of Pelham “The Goat Lady” Chardonnay 2022.
