A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 944: Southbrook Wines

Soutbrook wines

Southbrook Triomphe White 2023 (VQA Ontario)
A blend of Vidal “with some Chardonnay and Riesling.” Pale straw in colour; fresh, slightly grassy nose of green plum. Light-bodied, crisply dry, lemony starfruit flavour; finely textured with good persistence on the palate. Drink now. (89)

Southbrook Triomphe Riesling 2021 (Niagara Peninsula)
Pale straw colour with a hint of lime; a bouquet of grapefruit, white pepper and at thread of minerality; light-bodied, dry, grapefruit and lime flavours with a suggestion of honey. Lovely mouth feel. Can be opened now but will last a decade because of its fine spine of acidity. (91)

Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay 2021 (Niagara Peninsula)
Bright, straw colour; lightly toasty, apple nose; medium-bodied, dry, yellow apple flavour with well-integrated oak; good length. Drink now and through 2025. (89)

Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet Franc 2020 (Niagara Peninsula)
Ruby in colour; cedary, plum nose with oak spice; medium-bodied, dry; savoury, plum and redcurrant flavours; firmly structured and elegant. Hold 1–2 years. (90)

Southbrook Triomphe Merlot 2019 (Niagara Peninsula)
Deep ruby-crimson in colour; tealeaf and cherry bouquet with vanilla oak notes; medium-bodied, firmly structured, well-integrated oak, dried red fruit flavours with evident but ripe tannins. Drink now and through 2025. (90)

Southbrook Triomphe Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 (Niagara Peninsula)
Deep ruby-purple in colour; cedary, spicy, blackcurrant nose with sweet vanilla oak notes; medium-bodied, dry, red and blackcurrant flavours with well-integrated oak, ending on ripe tannins. Cab be opened now but will reward cellaring for 1–2 years (89–91)
