A miscellaneous selection of wines tasted over the past two weeks.

  • Adega Mea Dory Red 2015 (Lisboa – Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Tinta Roriz, Merlot – $16.95): Dense purple ruby colour; savoury-herbal nose of slightly smoky black fruits; medium to full-bodied, dry, bitter chocolate and black plum flavours. (88.5)
  • Baron de Hoen Pinot Blanc Reserve 2016 (Alsace): Straw colour with a peachy nose with mineral notes; medium-bodied, dry, peach flavour with a lemony peach pit finish. (89)
  • Tinhorn Creek Pinot Noir 2016 (Okanagan Valley): Bright ruby in colour with a cedary, black raspberry bouquet and spicy vanilla oak notes; medium-bodied, dry, ripe raspberry flavour with lively acidity and a firm tannic structure. (90)
  • The Prisoner Wine Company Thorn Merlot 2014 (Napa – $39.95): Dense purple-ruby in colour; lightly peppery, smoky, herbal nose of black fruits; medium to full-bodied, black fruit flavours. Intense and mouth-filling. (90)
  • Black Hills Tempranillo 2016 (Okanagan – $59.90): Dense purple colour; cedary, blackberry nose with light herbal notes; medium-bodied, dry, blackberry and redcurrant flavours carried on lively acidity. (89)
  • Black Hills Alibi 2017 (Okanagan – 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon – $24.90):  Straw coloured with a nose of ripe peach; medium-bodied, dry, beautifully balanced, peach and lemon flavours. (90)
  • Valley of the Moon Pinot Blanc and Viognier 2015 (Sonoma – $19.95): Bright straw in colour; peach and celery on the nose; medium-bodied, dry, peachy-melon flavour with balancing acidity. (88.5)
  • Valley of the Moon Blend ’41 2013 (Sonoma – $26.95): A blend of Zinfandel, Barbera, Syrah, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Sangiovese. Deep purple in colour; savoury, spicy plum on the nose; full-bodied (14.5% alcohol), dry, soft on the palate, porty, plum and black cherry flavours with ripe tannins and a dark chocolate finish. (88.5)
  • Mont Gravet IGP Côtes de Gascogne 2017 (South West France – $15.95): Very pale in colour; minerally, lightly aromatic, citrus nose; light to medium-bodied, dry, fresh, and lively green peach flavour with tangy acidity. Great value. (89)
  • Casal Thaulero Pinot Grigio (Abruzzo – $8.95): Pale straw in colour; a nose of white peach and melon; light-bodied, dry, easy-drinking, melon and lemon flavours. Great value. (88.5)
