A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 1004: Another Quiet Wine Week and an Early Birthday Dinner

Saturday’s steak

Monday, January 5th: With dinner (lamb chops) tasted Cave de Lugny Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2023 (LCBO #33667, $24.95). Ruby colour; cedary, raspberry bouquet; medium-bodied, dry, raspberry flavour with well-integrated oak and evident but supple tannins. (90)

Friday, January 9th: Dinner at the Port Dalhousie Legion. Every Friday they offer a fish and chip dinner at eye-popping low prices. Deborah had two pieces of haddock with onion rings ($18) and I had a bowl of clam chowder ($10) with a half pint of Niagara Oast House Ale.

Saturday, January 10th: Deborah’s pre-birthday dinner at Wellington Court (her actual birthday is Monday, when most restaurants are closed). We started with a glass of MW Sauvignon Blanc 2024 with Deborah’s deep-fried calamari and my delicious onion soup.

With steak to follow, a bottle of Meldville Barrel Select Syrah unfiltered 2022 by Derek Barnett (Niagara Peninsula). Chef/owner Eric Peacock comped us dessert of lemon pound cake. No candles.
