A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 995: A Launch and a Stein of Beer

Tennis, anyone?

Tuesday, October 7th: Our dinner: two table tennis rackets masquerading as pork chops. Consumed with a bottle of L’Orpeilleur Rosé 2024 from Quebec.

Michael Vaughan brought out from his Toronto cellar some of the earliest surviving wines that Paul Bosc Sr. had made when he was at Château-Gai, including this 1974 Pinot Chardonnay. The wine was, miraculously, still alive and drinkable.

Still going strong!

Other wines put out for tasting were Château des Charmes Pinot Noir 2020 and the winery’s neighbour, Amo Cabernet Merlot 2023.

Saturday, October 10th: Locktober Fest at the Lock Street Brewery in Port Dalhousie. Entering into the spirit of the occasion, I had the first beer of the year – a pint of Portside Pilsner (and a giant pretzel). The ’80s music by the Feverish Lemon was fantastic. Even Phil Dowell’s dog Kiwi enjoyed the show.

Sunday, October 12th: Play-offs begin: Game 1 against the Seattle Mariners. Go Jays! I cooked a leg of lamb for Thanksgiving dinner and opened a bottle of Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 from Central Victoria.

On Wednesday, Deborah and I leave for Bucharest for our Danube cruise. Will post after our return on October 30th.
