Les Vignerons du Castelas Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2017 (Rhône)
A serviceable blend of 50% White Grenache, 30% Roussanne, 20% Clairette. Shining white gold colour; minerally, lemony nose with a note of white blossoms; medium to full-bodied, dry, elegant, grapefruit and pear flavours. Great value. (90)
($15.95, Vintages #142125)
Château La Pirouette 2016 (Bordeaux)
Deep ruby in colour; cedary, ripe plum bouquet with oak spice and a light floral grace note; medium-bodied, dry, bright, gently savoury flavours of ripe plum and cherry and milk chocolate. Well-balanced, nicely structured and quite forward with ripe tannins. Drinking well now but will reward a couple of years’ cellaring. This tasty Medoc is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot has 13% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. (90 points) BEST BUY ($23.95, Vintages #644799)

For four days I was in Wiesbaden to attend the annual VDP. Grosses Gewächs tasting. On two days of tasting the wines from the 2018 vintage managed to sample 211 (out of 425). I concentrated on the first day on Spätburgunder from Württemburrg, Ahr, Rheinhessen, Pfalz and Baden; on the second, on Riesling from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheingau, Mittelrhein, Nahe, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Baden and Franken. Toro Bravo White 2018 (Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc) (From La Mancha, Spain – $7.95, LCBO #10711)
Palest lime in colour; very slightly smoky, grassy nose of ripe apple-lemon; medium-bodied, lemony, green plum and green fig flavours with tangy acidity. Tart but refreshing. A great bargain-priced Spanish white perfect for seafood. (88.5 points / BEST BUY)
