A Wine Lover’s Diary, part 1036: Chinese Food, Toronto Lunch, a Steak Dinner and a Performance in Church

Monday, September 7th: Tasted two more wines from Palatine Hills.

Palatine Hills Overtime Sparkling Brut Nature
Golden straw in colour; persistent mousse of tiny bubbles; toasty, leesy, apple nose; light to medium-bodied, dry, apple flavour with biscuity notes, lively acidity and long finish. (89)

Palatine Hills Overtime Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Dense purple-ruby; cedary, spicy, black fruit on the nose with oak spice; full-bodied, dry, richly extracted plum and dark chocolate flavours; well-integrated oak and lively, balancing acidity. (90)

Dinner: Pasta carbonara with Unscripted Montage 2023 (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc): Deep purple-ruby in colour; cedary, blackcurrant nose with oak spice; medium-bodied, dry, savoury blackcurrant and black plum flavours with lively acidity and well-integrated oak. (90)

Tuesday, September 8th: Book club night for Deborah, so my friend Stephen (whose wife is also a book club member) came over for dinner. I ordered in Chinese food from Ma. Stephen drank Creemore Pilsner and I finished off the opened bottle of Palatine Hills Overtime Sparkling Brut Nature.

Wednesday, September 9th: A solemn day with all the remembrances of the Twin Tower terrorist attacks. Dinner: cheese plate (after I returned from choir practice).

Thursday, September 10th: Took the GO Train into Toronto to have lunch with our friend Frank Daley at Le Select Bistro on Wellington. Was looking forward to having their mussels and French Fries, but they had run out of mussels! Ordered Truite amandine instead, with a bottle of Château Haut-Grelot 2025 (a white Bordeaux).

Dinner: Sautéed clams with a bottle of Short Cut Chardonnay/Pinot Noir 2025.

Friday, September 11th: Dinner at The Keg. Ordered New York strip loin, Chicago style – and a bottle of the wine we had had earlier this week: Unscripted Montage 2023.
