The Shawn and Ed Brewing Company sent me six of their products. But since I’m not a beer maven, I asked my colleague Jill Troyer and her husband Don to taste them for me and report back. Here are their notes.
Lagershed Salted Lime (ABV 4.0%)
Light straw colour, clear, with thin foam texture and slow carbonation. Citrus, fruity aroma. Restrained hop bitterness, fruity citrus flavour, with medium malt sweetness. Well balanced and refreshing with a medium finish.
Score: 90
Pair with: Pork Belly, nachos & salsa.
Lagershed Original (ABV 5.2%)
Straw coloured and clear. Notes of grain, bread flour, and herbs on the nose. Floral flavours on the palate, with fresh hops. Soft body and good balance, some bitterness on the finish.
Score: 89
Pair with: Pizza, pasta, or chicken wings.
Lagershed Ultra (ABV 3.5%)
Straw coloured, slow carbonation, with a soft body. Spruce, banana, bread flour and fig aromas. Moderate hop bitterness, with bready, caramel flavours. Short finish, soft mouthfeel.
Score: 89
Pair with: Burgers, stuffed potato skins.
Lagershed Cherry (ABV 5.2%)
Light amber, and slightly hazy, this Lagershed Cherry’s aromas are fruity and floral, with cherry, and cloves. Crisp on the palate, with appealing notes of almond extract and bread flour blending with cherry. Slightly metallic on the after taste.
Score: 88
Pair with: Charcuterie board.
Lagershed Dark (ABV: 5.5%)
Dark brown with fluffy foam texture. Chocolate and coffee aromas delight. Well balanced in terms of alcohol and bitterness. Roasted coffee and dark chocolate on the palate echo the aromas, with an added layer of caramel and toffee.
Score: 91
Pair with: BBQ burger or grilled pork.
Lagershed Pale Ale (ABV: 6.0%)
Coppery colour, with caramel dominating on the nose, and some layers of apricot, raisin, and prunes. Aromas give way to toast on the tongue, with medium malt sweetness, adding caramel and coffee to the palate.
Score: 90
Pair with: Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and chips.
Lagershed India Pale Ale (ABV: 6.0%)
Pale and hazy with fluffy foam. Bready and somewhat acrid on the nose. Citrus and resinous flavours dominate. Hop bitterness is moderate, leaning to aggressive.
Score: 87
Pair with: Tacos or curries.
