A Wine Lover’s Diary, Part 600: OWA Presentation

Monday, May 30th: This is the 600th edition of the blog! Pause for vinous refreshment.

Had breakfast with my sister Shirley, who is in town from Montreal; then came home to write my 680 NEWS wine reviews.

Chianti Classico tasting at the Four Seasons. Twenty-six producers from the Classico zone showing their Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione mostly from the 2013 or 2014 vintages, although there were some older vintages as well. I didn’t get around to tasting 70-odd wines, but my top scoring wines (90+) were:

Giancarlo Guarnieri with his 2011 Chianti Classico

Best value: Castello Vicchiomaggio Chianti Classico San Jacopo 2014 ($19.95).

For dinner, a bottle of Quails’ Gate Pinot Noir 2014 (deep ruby colour; spicy, cherry nose; medium-bodied, dry, red plum and cherry flavours with a smoky note and lively acidity (89)).

Tuesday, May 31st: Spent the day catching up on emails, evaluating wines for Grand Cru and making last-minute preparations for tomorrow’s Ontario Wine Awards presentations at Niagara College.

Wednesday, June 1st: Drove down to Niagara College with Deborah and Michael Vaughan. Michael Bonacini was the host and did an excellent job presenting the winning wineries with their medals (see results at ontariowineawards.ca). The wineries seem to have enjoyed the new format – rather than a dinner, an afternoon event with finger-food prepared by the students at Niagara College and served in their Benchmark Restaurant.

The Spinosas with The White Wine of the Year award:
Exultet “The Blessed” Chardonnay 2013

Winemaker Rob Power with the Red Wine of the Year award:
Creekside Broken Press Syrah Reserve 2012

Thursday, June 2nd: Recorded my 680 NEWS wine reviews. Then got down to some tasting since the samples have been accumulating.

Friday, June 3rd: A Winerytohome tasting at Doug Towers, with David Lawrason.
