680 NEWS wine reviews – March 17–19, 2017

Rustenburg RM Nicholson 2014
Rustenburg in South Africa's Stellenbosch region makes a very tasty blend of Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon as an homage to its late winemaker-owner RM Nicholson. Dense purple-black in colour, the wine has a spicy, cedary, herbal nose of blackcurrant and licorice with a peppery note; it's rich and full-bodied, dry and savoury with a floral note and firm tannins on the finish. It costs $19.95 at Vintages outlets. A wine for hearty red meat dishes. That's Rustenburg RM Nicholson 2014 from South Africa. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #278390)

Gekkeikan Sake California
It may seem strange to recommend a Sake produced in California around St. Patrick's Day but I'm sure the Irish will forgive me because this is a total bargain. For $8 at Vintages outlets – a 750 mL bottle of rice wine. That's rice wine, not Icewine. Gekkeikan Junmai Sake is water white in colour. On the nose you get almond blossom with a spirity note. There's a touch of sweetness in mid palate with a velvety-smooth mouthfeel accompanied by a long finish with a hint of orange peel. You can serve it warmed or chilled. It's great with raw fish or carpaccio. That's Gekkeikan Sake from California. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($8, Vintages #145433)
