680 NEWS wine reviews – February 17–19, 2017

Veedha Douro Red 2013
Portugal's Douro Valley is the home of the fortified wine, port – but today some 50 per cent of the wines produced in this region are table wines, made from the same grapes as port. A case in point is Veedha Douro Red 2013. Deep ruby in colour, the wine has a dusty, earthy, blackberry bouquet with a note of oak; it's full-bodied, dry and savoury, with plum and mulberry flavours tinged with oak spice and ending with supple tannins. It costs $14.95 on the LCBO's general list and is a perfect match for hearty winter stews or fresh parmesan cheese. That's Veedha Douro Red 2013 from Portugal. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, LCBO #255851) (88)

Rabl Lengenlois Grüner Veltliner 2015
I'm a great fan of Austria's Grüner Veltliner – a dry white wine that can match a variety of dishes. Currently at Vintages outlets is Rabl Lengenlois Grüner Veltliner 2015. Pale straw in colour, it has Grüner Veltliner's characteristic nose of white pepper and green peach. This wine is medium-bodied, dry, beautifully balanced, with apple and pear flavours and a great mouth-feel. It costs $14.95 a bottle and it's the kind of white wine that improves with bottle age. Match it with seafood salad or asparagus. That's Rabl Lengenlois Grüner Veltliner 2015 from Austria at Vintages. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #377457) (88.5)
